The Careers and Employability Department takes the career of our students seriously, and aims to help them do great work by providing life-long career coaching, essential skills, and business connections around world. The department also works to help students achieve their professional goals, regardless of what they study at Lancaster University Ghana. Here is an update of what has been done during the month of January to with regards to students’ professional development;
WORK-STUDY PROGRAM
The selected study buddies have completed a training program with their course leaders and are actively assisting our Foundation students with their coursework.
Measures have been put in place to make sure both course leaders and Foundation students are benefiting from the these Study Buddies/Teaching Assistants, as such an evaluation form has been designed for the lecturers and students to share their thoughts/comments/feedback at the end of the term.
So far, most of the study buddies we have engaged with find the Work-Study Program very useful and happy for the opportunity given to them to give back to the junior class.
CAREER PEER ADVISOR PROGRAM (CPA)
The Career Peer Advisor (CPA) is a voluntary work study intern who assists his/her peers in both career and personal development. The CPA serves as a student brand ambassador who inspires and supports students on campus to engage themselves in career events and workshops. They also work with everyone in the community. He/ She exemplifies the Lancaster Student brand on campus.
We have Kwasi Owusu-Antoh (Assistant HR Manager, Lancaster University Ghana) volunteering to be the patron for this exclusive program. He will be responsible for the personal development/grooming of the selected CPAs.
Interested staff members who have a passion of grooming our students in both career and personal development are welcome to come on board to make this program a success.
CV WRITING WORKSHOP
On 21st January, 2016 the Careers office organized a CV writing workshop for foundation and undergraduate students. The strategy this time round was to engage with a smaller group at a time, since we wanted a more engaging and practical session.
We however had three sessions on the same day at different times. In total, about 43 students were in attendance and they found the workshop useful.
The students were exposed to the different CV templates available to land an individual a job or interview opportunity. Tips on what employers look out for in a CV were also share to students.
Our aim was to get the students write and own an outstanding CV.
Facilitators for the workshop were Emma Laryea (Senior HR Manager, LUG), Giselle Osei Partington (Business Development Manager, LUG), Kwasi Owusu-Antoh (Assistant HR Manager LUG) and Akua Ampah (Career and Internship Placement Coordinator).
