This summer, Lancaster University Ghana’s (LUG) careers and employability department placed 52 students in internship positions with 15 companies in Ghana, Nigeria, Kenya and Cote D’Ivoire.
These placements were in industries such as the financial industry, education, media, law etc. in companies such as Lancaster University Ghana, Zenith Bank, Ghana Home loans, SIC, Thompson Chambers among others.
Internships provide an opportunity for the student to get to grips with the working environment. What stands out to employers is those students who also have real world work experiences by the time they graduate. This makes them more marketable; as they may require less training and are assumed to be able to handle more responsibilities.
Gaining work experience is a very important part of the academic process in Lancaster University Ghana, and is a great way for students to acquaint themselves with a field they are learning about. By the time of graduation, the students have confidence that the degrees they are receiving are the right ones for them.
LUG students also undergo CV writing workshops, interview skills workshops and mock interview sessions during the academic year, to equip them with the basic skills before starting their internships.
