The African Innovations Award (AIA) seeks to promote uniqueness amongst African businesses and individuals to raise the bar by inspiring the next generation to be distinct and establish outstanding businesses that can compete internationally.

AIA realises that there are several developmental problems present in all African countries. This indicates that ideas and innovative solutions on Education, Healthcare, Science &Technology, Energy and Agriculture can be simultaneously implemented in countries across Africa.

Lancaster University Ghana (LUG) as the proud headline sponsor of this event seeks to recognise, promote and support the efforts of young African innovators and entrepreneurs.

“The increasing relevance of research and the development of various developmental issues in Africa call for the recognition of such innovation events”, said LUG Executive Director Raghav Lal at the Demonstrations Talk. “LUG as an institution is very proud to be part of this event to encourage continental solutions and ideas from Africans themselves“, he added.

AIA, in partnership with TEDx Accra, decided to recognise and award innovative thinkers across the continent. This will inadvertently promote the youth to continue to set up unique businesses for creating solutions of importance for the growth of the African continent.

The aim of the African Innovations Award is to “recognise the minds that inspire our continent.” The African Innovations Award identifies and rewards Africa’s innovative thinkers between the ages of 18 – 35 in the Science & Technology, Healthcare, Education, Energy and Agriculture sectors.

Interesting innovations pitched at the Demonstrations Talk included the production of low calories and low fat soft drinks from raw millet, providing cheaper alternatives to charcoal and wood fuel, converting waste cooking oil to fuel, and introducing a mobile application to help the user make purchases and save at the same time.
