“We have become not a melting pot but a beautiful mosaic. Different people, different beliefs, different yearnings, different hopes, different dreams”. – Jimmy Carter – Former US President
To celebrate cultural diversity at Lancaster University Ghana (LUG), the Community Engagement Office and the Students’ Council united the community in an evening of cultural representation from Africa and beyond.
LUG as an institution offers a welcoming and diverse community with a global perspective on life and learning. With the theme Cultural Diversity, the organising committee sought to ensure that the 26 nationalities on campus were physically represented and felt right at home.
One of the interesting facts learned was that the words of South Africa’s national anthem, Nkosi Sikelel’ iAfrika were printed in different national languages on the back of T-shirts to ensure that everyone knows the words when attending events. It was also interesting to learn that Sri Lanka is known as the Land of smiling people. This is quite evident in one of LUG’s staff members, Coomerene Rodrigo, who hails from Sri Lanka.
Those present were treated to cuisines from different countries, and as far as the Ghanaian jollof vs Nigerian jollof debate goes, Gambia carried the title with Gambian jollof being voted the best meal of the night.
Members of the Lancaster community appreciated the uniqueness of cultural differences and celebrated their cultural similarities.
To crown the night, those in attendance danced their feet off to beats from Africa and beyond.
