In a special learning adventure, our second-year Law students from LUG recently embarked on a meaningful seven-day journey to Rwanda. This trip was sparked by their Law lecturer, Mrs. Agartha Rockson, who often talked about Rwanda’s legal system, and fueled by the presence of a Rwandan student among them, creating a personal link to a country known for its recovery after a tragic past.
Rwanda, often called the “Land of a Thousand Hills,” offered more than just beautiful scenery. It revealed its heart, with its cleanliness, advanced technology, and a warm welcome to all, no matter where they came from. Our students were deeply moved by Rwanda’s commitment to treating everyone with respect, showing them lessons in togetherness and humility.
The trip was an eye-opening experience, especially as the students learned about the dark history of the Rwandan Genocide against the Tutsi in 1994. They discovered how Rwanda has progressed from those terrible times to where it stands now—a united and progressive nation.
One of the most significant parts of the visit was exploring Rwanda’s legal system. Our students were impressed by how quickly the country’s courts worked, showing fairness and efficiency in delivering justice. Rwanda’s dedication to following the rule of law, along with the determination and strong leadership among its people, teaches valuable lessons on how law and governance can rebuild a nation.
This trip to Rwanda has broadened our students’ understanding of International Law, giving them practical examples of legal principles in action. It has also instilled in them a deep respect for unity and the importance of setting a good example.
