Ahmed Darkye was the Class of 2024’s Valedictorian, earning the highest GPA of his cohort, and was awarded the Chancellor’s Medal for his exceptional academic achievements. The Chancellor’s Medal, established in 2004 to honor HRH Princess Alexandra’s 40 years of service as Lancaster University’s founding chancellor, is given to the most meritorious students at the university. This prestigious award recognizes Ahmed’s outstanding academic performance, leadership, and personal growth at LUG.
Ahmed’s journey to this moment was not without its challenges. In his powerful valedictory speech, he reflected on the early doubts he had about achieving a first-class degree, initially setting his sights on a second-class upper. However, through hard work, resilience, and the support of family and friends, Ahmed not only achieved a first-class degree but also emerged as the valedictorian of LUG’s Class of 2024.
Ahmed’s time at LUG began in 2020, during the height of the COVID-19 lockdown. He recalled how a blend of excitement and nervousness marked the transition from online learning to in-person interactions, as he and his classmates navigated the new experience of university life. Despite these early uncertainties, Ahmed quickly formed close bonds with his classmates, describing them as a “big family” where everyone supported each other.
Reflecting on his academic journey, Ahmed humorously recounted his experience with the challenging “Fundamentals of CS” module, a course that initially seemed daunting. Yet, with the help of a classmate, he took ownership of his learning, mastering the material through self-study and dedication. This marked a turning point in his academic strategy, one that allowed him to balance academic rigor with the enjoyment of student life.
In his speech, Ahmed also paid tribute to his parents, who were his silent motivators throughout his university journey. He credited them with instilling in him the mindset of achieving more than what was expected, urging him to be part of a generation that would surpass the achievements of those before them.
Beyond academics, Ahmed highlighted the importance of friendships and community at Lancaster University Ghana. He expressed deep gratitude to his friends and peers, who were his constant support system, helping him navigate the highs and lows of university life.
He also acknowledged the role of the faculty, who pushed students to reach their full potential, teaching them not only academic content but also the importance of critical thinking, passion, and perseverance.
As the recipient of the Chancellor’s Medal, Ahmed Darkye’s story is one of resilience, self-discovery, and determination. His academic journey is an inspiration to his fellow graduates and a shining example of the transformative power of education. Looking ahead, Ahmed’s journey is far from over. He is set to pursue an MSc in Cyber Security at Lancaster University in the UK, a testament to his passion for technology and his desire to contribute to the ever-evolving field of digital security.
