Through our Emerging Technologies Centre, we are strengthening digital safety education in high schools, equipping teachers to extend essential cybersecurity knowledge to more students. As digital technologies become increasingly central to education and everyday life, understanding how to use them safely is just as important as knowing how to use them. Recognising this need, Lancaster University Ghana (LUG) has trained approximately 21 ICT teachers from various high schools in cybersecurity, reinforcing its commitment to practical technology education and digital responsibility.

The training, organised through our Emerging Technologies Centre (ETC), took place as part of Cybersecurity Awareness Month, highlighting the importance of developing safe online habits and helping young people recognise and respond to digital threats. A key outcome of the training was the development of visual cybersecurity hygiene posters by participating teachers. The posters translated essential security practices into simple, practical and actionable guidance for high school students, providing an accessible resource that teachers can use to promote safer online behaviour in their classrooms.

By training teachers, Lancaster University Ghana is extending the reach of its technology education initiatives beyond direct student engagement. Teachers are uniquely positioned to reinforce these lessons in their schools, helping more students understand the importance of protecting personal information, recognising online risks and adopting responsible digital practices.

This approach reflects our commitment to building sustainable capacity in technology education. Rather than limiting learning opportunities to individual training sessions, investing in educators creates the potential for knowledge to be shared continuously with successive groups of students.

The initiative builds on the broader work of Lancaster University Ghana’s Emerging Technologies Centre, a hub for hands-on learning, research and capacity building in emerging fields. The Centre provides opportunities to explore technologies including artificial intelligence, robotics, blockchain, the Internet of Things and 3D printing, supporting practical learning and innovation.

Through its programmes for school students and educators, the ETC connects technological resources with the people who can use them to create meaningful impact. The cybersecurity training adds another important dimension to this work by emphasising that technological advancement must be accompanied by the knowledge and responsibility required to navigate the digital world safely. As digital risks continue to evolve, equipping educators to teach cybersecurity fundamentals is an important step towards building a more informed and security-conscious generation.
