Lancaster University Ghana organized a journalism masterclass on the theme “Media Ethics” for Ghanaian media professionals. This masterclass took place on 18th July, 2015 and was attended by around 30 participants from top media houses in Ghana. It aimed at addressing critical issues and perspectives in media ethics. Such need is determined by the increasing number of ethical challenges faced by Ghanaian journalists.
The maiden edition of the masterclass provided a unique forum for professionals to confront and discuss issues crucial to understanding media ethics and its effect on our country. It offered participants an understanding of, and insights into, ethical aspects of the journalistic practice, with a particular focus on issues pertaining to facts and opinions in the journalism field.
The session covered topics such as creating and enforcing awareness on media ethics (print and online), practical approach towards reflecting facts and opinion in news media, establishing common grounds around facts and opinions etc.
Martin Asiedu-Dartey (TV3) tweeted “I was privileged to give a presentation at the @LancasterGhana Journalism Workshop today. ‘Twas very educational”.
Our participants enjoyed themselves and the focus on facts and opinions as well as citizen journalism was insightful for them. The material they brought back has been shared among other colleagues who could not make it. Concerning future topics, we always are happy to have topics covered all around digital (marketing, news, business models etc.) – Tim (Pulse)
The Journalism Masterclass which attracted participants from media houses like Myjoyonline, Starr FM, Kasapa FM, TV3, Daily Guide, Citi FM, Ghana Broadcasting Corporation, Pulse, Ghana Business and Times among others, is set to take place quarterly.
