“We have become not a melting pot but a beautiful mosaic. Different people, different beliefs, different yearnings, different hopes, different dreams.” – Jimmy Carter, Former US President
To celebrate cultural diversity at Lancaster University Ghana (LUG), The Students’ Council united the community in an evening of cultural representation from Africa and beyond.
LUG as an institution offers a welcoming and diverse community with a global perspective on life and learning. The organizing committee sought to ensure that the 26 nationalities on campus were physically represented and felt right at home.
One of the interesting facts learned was the words of South Africa’s national anthem It was also interesting to learn that Sri Lanka is known as the Land of Smiling People. Those present were treated to cuisines from different countries. As far as the Ghanaian Jollof vs. Nigerian Jollof debate goes the spirited discussions and tastings demonstrated the strong cultural pride and friendly rivalry between the two nations, with attendees passionately defending their preferred version of the beloved dish.
Members of the Lancaster community appreciated the uniqueness of cultural differences and celebrated their similarities. To crown the night, those in attendance danced their feet off to beats from Africa and beyond.
