Two exceptional students from Lancaster University Ghana (L.U.G) had the unique opportunity to step into the world of diplomacy as part of this year’s Ambassador for a Day (AfD) initiative, hosted at the British High Commissioner’s Residence. This exciting experience formed the grand finale of the Alumni Apex Mentoring Program for the year by the Alumni Relations Office, allowing students to witness high-level discussions and engage with leaders shaping Ghana’s future.
The event, chaired by Prof. Nana Aba Appiah Amfo, Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ghana, brought together AfD winners from outside Accra, mentors, passionate young female leaders, and key partners. It was a day of meaningful dialogue where mentors and mentees shared insights, reflected on lessons learned, and outlined their commitments to advancing gender equality, youth leadership, and economic empowerment.
Now in its fourth edition, the initiative was hosted in partnership with the Barbados High Commission, the Italian Embassy, the UK-Ghana Chamber of Commerce, the Omni Group of Companies, and Cyndex Limited. The programme provides a powerful platform for young women to build ambition and momentum, inspiring them to assume leadership roles, advocate for women’s rights, and make their mark in diplomacy.
The Ambassador for a Day competition is part of the British High Commission in Ghana’s Gender and Equalities Month in March. Each year, ambassadors, high commissioners, and female CEOs unite to mentor young women, highlighting their leadership and entrepreneurial potential, while supporting Sustainable Development Goal Five, which promotes gender equality and women’s empowerment as fundamental for a peaceful and prosperous world.
By participating in this programme, L.U.G students were not just observers—they became active participants in conversations shaping Ghana’s future, gaining invaluable insights and inspiration to carry forward in their academic and professional journeys. This experience exemplifies Lancaster University Ghana’s commitment to nurturing globally minded leaders who are ready to make meaningful contributions both locally and internationally.
