On 28th April, 19th May and 25th May, Lancaster University Ghana organised a series of counsellors’ workshops in three of Ghana’s regional capitals. Every year, Lancaster University Ghana hosts this inbound workshop to educate counsellors as they prepare high school students for academic, career and social well-being.
This year’s workshop, which took place in Accra, Cape Coast and Kumasi respectively, had over 40 counsellors from various private and public senior high schools in attendance. “Enabling transition: Understanding University Culture and Academic Expectations”, the theme for this year’s workshop, aimed to actively engage counsellors and collaboratively create constructive possibilities for action with regards to preparing students for life beyond school.
“In planning for this year’s workshop, our goal was to provide counsellors with the information they need to best serve their high school students in making their post-secondary plans,” said Professor Cynthia Forson, Deputy Provost of Lancaster University Ghana. “We want to be sure that each detail is covered and each question is answered so counsellors can help their students adjust easily to the university.”
Lantame Nikabou, the counsellor for Hilltop International School, expressed his gratitude to the university for having the well-being of students in mind. He further stated that “we have benefited massively from this workshop, and we will surely extend this to our students”.
“Students who have challenges will be able to access support from us. We will give guidelines and our peers will be creative to find solutions to their problems”, shared Linda Philips, the counsellor for The Ridge School.
